De La Hoya Says About Eddie Hearn Competing Canelo With Bivol: The Stupidest Step In Boxing History

JAKARTA - Oscar De La Hoya said Eddie Hearn made a stupid move by bringing Canelo Alvarez together with Dmirty Bivol.

Bivol made a big surprise when he beat Canelo by unanimous decision two weeks ago.

"The fact that the promoter of this event pushed Bivol to Canelo, it was the stupidest move in boxing history," De La Hoya told USA Today Sports, referring to Hearn. "This action knows no boxing world."

"It was the dumbest move of anyone to let Canelo go against Bivol. I would never let Canelo go against Bivol."

Hearn has played an important role in Canelo's career in recent years. He did not hide his admiration for this Mexican boxer.

Hearn, founder of Matchroom Sport, said he doesn't decide who Canelo is up against.

"To think that Canelo Alvarez let me make decisions about his career is a bit naive to Oscar De La Hoya, who talks a lot, but I mean the biggest lesson you can learn from those comments is, you know, don't get too high, kids," he said. Hearn to The Boxing Voice. "That's the basis of his comment."

“De La Hoya is an extraordinary fighter. He definitely knows more about boxing than I do, but I don't decide who Canelo Alvarez will fight.

"He and Eddy Reynoso chose the fight. He was the big favorite against Dmitry Bivol and lost."

Hearn praised Bivol but also acknowledged one should commend Canelo for pushing himself beyond the limits and putting up a big fight.

"What do you want?" asked Hearn. "A champion to not pass a difficult exam?

"We have to commend Canelo Alvarez for constantly wanting to prove himself out of his comfort zone.
