Deputy Minister Of LHK Releases A Pair Of Gingko Gibbons In Pekanbaru

PEKANBARU - Deputy Minister (Wamen) of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong released a pair of Gibbon Gibbons (hylobates agilis) better known as Wau Wau in Sultan Syarif Hasyim Forest Park, Pekanbaru City.

The release of protected animals was witnessed by the Secretary of the Directorate General of KSDAE KLHK, the Director of Forest and Land Fire Control at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Head of the Riau Province Environment and Forestry Service and representatives from the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency.

"This pair of gibbon gibbons is the result of a voluntary submission to the Riau KSDA Center, by the people of Dumai City and Pekanbaru City, who have been keeping these animals for several years," said Head of Riau KSDA Center Fifin Arfiana Jogasara, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, May 18.

The Ungko Gibbon, a 10-year-old male and 8-year-old female, had previously been habituated in the animal transit enclosure of the Riau KSDA Great Hall for one year and had shown their wild nature again, so they deserved to be released into the wild.

This animal is one of the species protected by the state, in accordance with the Law on Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems. The world conservation organization, IUCN includes this gibbon species in the endangered (EN) category. In addition, as long as this gibbon is included in appendix 1, which means it should not be traded internationally.

"The nature of this animal is arboreal (hanging), eats fruit and leaves, has a distinctive voice. Ungko gibbons generally live in primary and secondary forest types with tall trees," said Fifin.
