The World Will Ensure The Defeat Of President Putin In Ukraine, Canadian PM: He Thinks He Will Win

JAKARTA - The world will do everything possible to ensure Russian President Vladimir Putin loses the war in Ukraine, including subjecting Moscow to years of sanctions, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said late Sunday.

"What (President) Putin needs to understand is, the West is really determined and decided against what he's doing," Prime Minister Trudeau told Reuters in an interview.

"His illegal war, his escalation, his crossing of red lines by choosing to invade Ukraine further means we will do everything we can as a world to ensure that he loses."

Speaking on the sidelines of an impromptu visit to Ukraine to speak with President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he described as a friend, PM Trudeau said President Putin made a big mistake.

"He committed atrocities against civilians, and it's all something he did because he thought he could win. But he can only lose," said PM Trudeau, when asked what he would say to President Putin on the eve of Russia's anniversary of defeat. Nazi.

President Putin, Russia's supreme leader since 1999 who will preside over Monday's birthday celebrations, has in recent years used Victory Day to stab the West from a tribute on Red Square before a parade of troops, tanks, rockets and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Earlier, Prime Minister Trudeau said Canada would provide Ukraine with new weapons and equipment, and would reopen its embassy in Kyiv, the country's capital.

Prime Minister Trudeau added that all countries that have imposed sanctions on Moscow, which have hurt the Russian economy so much, are determined to keep them for as long as necessary, even years.

"Vladimir Putin has been unable to change the stability and growth and prosperity of the world for more than 70 years and hopes to continue to benefit from that stability, growth and prosperity," he said.
