Schumacher won 72 of his victories while defending Ferrari and 19 at Benetton.
Hamilton won 70 Grand Prix championships with Mercedes so far, after 21 other trophies he got with McLaren.
After the race, Hamilton said equaling Schumacher's record was something he had never imagined before. The British racer is now eyeing his seventh world title and is the most successful racer of all time after winning the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nurburgring circuit, Germany, saying his achievement will take a long time to absorb its meaning.
Schumacher's record lasted quite a long time, and some doubted it would be broken. However, Hamilton proves it is not impossible when he still has a chance to win his 100th victory onwards with Mercedes.
"I don't know what it means for the other riders when they get this win, but it will take some time for you to analyze it and to understand, to realize what it really means," said the 35-year-old.
"Like the rest of us, I grew up watching Michael win all those grands prix and I can't imagine matching him.
"I think arriving in Formula 1 is the first step of that dream and of course equalizing (three titles) Ayrton (Senna). But Michael is too far.
"I never thought I could get here today to match him and I am honored at this time and the opportunity Mercedes gave me when I was 13 years old.
