Roy Keane Suggests Manchester United Keep Cristiano Ronaldo
JAKARTA - Football legend Roy Keane advised his former team Manchester United to keep Cristiano Ronaldo next season.
The future of the Portuguese superstar is still unclear despite signing a two-year contract at the start of the 2021/2022 season. He is even rumored to be returning to Real Madrid as the club tries to bring in Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain.
In the midst of the issue, Keane also opened his voice. He said that Ronaldo was already quite old in age, but releasing a prolific player like himself was not a good option.
"If the top goalscorer, the player you rely on, is 37 years old, that's certainly not great, but I would definitely keep Ronaldo," Keane told Sky Sport.
"I just think with the goals scored, his performances, guaranteeing he stays at the club. But Manchester United have to get players around him, they have to get other strikers, there has to be competition for places," Keane continued.
Even though he is 37 years old, the player nicknamed CR7 is still productive with the Red Devils in all competitions this season. In the English Premier League he even entered the ranks of the top scorers with a collection of 18 goals.
Ronaldo managed to add to his goal coffers in the latest match against Brentford on Tuesday, May 3 in the morning WIB. In that match he scored one goal to help win 3-0 for his team.
With a collection of 18 goals, Ronaldo is only four behind Mohamed Salah in first position. With two games remaining, Ronaldo has a great chance to match and even surpass the Egypt international.
"There may be discussions that need to be had about the way you are going to play or that you are not going to play week in and week out. But why would you get rid of a player who scores a lot of goals? I don't see any logic in that," said Keane.
Ronaldo's contract with Manchester United will expire on June 30, 2023 and there is an option for an extension of one year depending on the performance he shows.
However, the future of CR7 at Old Trafford is still gray. Moreover, there are rumors that the former Juventus player will not be included in the tactical scheme of the new MU coach Erik ten Hag who will start working next season.
