JAKARTA - You should think a thousand times when you want to eat food that falls on the floor even for five minutes because this can have a negative impact on your health, said President of the Indonesian Scientific Society for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISSPP), Prof. Ingrid S. Surono, MSc, Ph.D.
"Food that falls is picked up and then rubbed with hands that are not clear or not, instead adding germs to food and then entering our mouths," he said in the 9th Indonesia Hygiene Forum webinar entitled "Knowing Probiotic Technology in Household Hygiene Products", launched ANTARA , Thursday, April 28.
The professor at Bina Nusantara University said, through a study, researchers involved Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) bacteria on the floor and then dropped food for 5 seconds. They found that the bacteria Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) which infects the intestinal tract and blood can stick to food that has fallen on the floor for up to 5 seconds.
"As many as 99 percent of all Salmonella germs stick to food within 5 seconds, especially if it's been 5 minutes they have proliferated in food, the contents of which are also nutrients for these microbes," said Ingrid.
"Hopefully with this information people will think 1000 times, especially not given to children or the elderly because they are very vulnerable, because their immunity is not as good as young people," he continued.
Citing the Mayo Clinic, infection with Salmonella typhi bacteria can cause diseases, one of which is typhoid fever, which is a serious health threat in developing countries, especially for children.
On carpet, the bacteria that stick for 8 hours can even reach 10 million more, while on wood the number can reach tens of thousands and this is enough to make you infected with disease, especially if the bacteria find adequate conditions to multiply.
"In ceramics, the number of bacteria is stable 24 hours. It can survive in one day. So be very careful, the environment at home must be as free of germs as possible. Meanwhile, from wood it decreases after 12 hours, until the number is in the hundreds," he said. Ingrid.
Ingrid reminded that it is important for you to keep your house clean, including in every corner of the house that is difficult to clean because that location is often a hotbed of various types of microbes. On the other hand, various appliances at home, one of which is a dishwashing sponge, you should even pay attention to their cleanliness and condition.
"Dishwashing sponges are generally moist, so we must always try to dry them because the more humid it is, the more microbes like to live there," he said.
