Does Growing Gray Hair Need To Be Removed? This Is According To Experts

JAKARTA - Jakarta (ANTARA) - Removing gray hair may temporarily solve the problem and let you maintain the hair color of your youth a little longer. But will plucking gray hair damage your scalp or is it worse?

Hair turns white due to a decrease in the production of melanin-producing cells that give pigment to hair and skin. This is actually a normal condition as you age, according to despite your exact age you see the lines of Rohit Kakar, MD, FAAD, owner and director of Orchard Lake Dermatology & Cosmetics in Orchard Lake, Michigan.

But, still, you may not be happy with it and then pluck your gray hair. As a result, gray hair will grow back. Plucking gray hair will temporarily remove it. But just like strands of hair that fall out naturally, eventually hair will grow back. When that happens, it will be the same color you drew. Even if you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

"Once certain hair follicles lose pigment-producing cells, they will simply regenerate gray hair," explains Jeffrey Hsu, MD, FAAD dermatologist at Oak Dermatology Chicago.

As for the opinion that the warning that plucking gray hair will cause it to grow more is just a myth.

"Removing one gray hair will not add more gray hair. When the hair is pulled, it does not affect the other hair around it, because each follicle has its own genetics," says Kakar.

Another impact of plucking gray hair is your risk of getting an infection or getting a scar. Pulling hair repeatedly can damage the follicles, potentially leading to infection or scarring.

Over time, this can even traumatize the hair follicles so that they stop growing altogether. If you repeatedly pull some gray hair, you could end up bald.

Then, is there a safe way to remove gray hair? According to experts, there is no way to reduce the risk of infection, scarring, or hair loss from hair pulling (grey or otherwise).

If you really can't stand the sight of gray hair, then trimming it can be the solution.

"If you want to get rid of gray hair, the best way is to cut it very carefully with small scissors. This will avoid trauma to the hair follicles," advises Hsu.
