Compact Academics Reject Work Creation Law

JAKARTA - Academics who are professors, deans, and lecturers from dozens of public and private universities are unanimous in rejecting the ratification of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation.

Academic representative who is also a Professor of Constitutional Law at Padjajaran University, Susi Dwi Harijanti said she was surprised to see the ratification of the Job Creation Law by the DPR.

"The ratification of the Job Creation Law which took place in the middle of the night really shocked us all. This overturned the public's perspective on the picture of the performance of the DPR and the government regarding the formation of regulations or the formation of laws," said Susi while reading a virtual statement on Wednesday, October 7 .

Susi was surprised by the fast action of the DPR and the government, which are usually considered slow in making laws. In fact, laws that are clearly needed by the people, such as the Bill on the Elimination of Sexual Violence, have been postponed.

"Why is the work copyright law whose procedures and content as previously stated have a lot of problems have to be passed quickly and even take up a break," said Susi.

Susi said, a number of academics have made many criticisms accompanied by scientific studies on environmental impacts and worker welfare. However, the government and the DPR are still unfazed by these criticisms.

"Do you really not want to hear our voice, the voice of the people as holders of sovereignty in this country? Who is this Job Creation Law for if the people are not heard?" smack him.

The DPR approved the ratification of the Work Creation Omnibus Law Bill (RUU). Approval was taken at the Plenary Meeting for the Closing of Session Period I of the 2020-2021 Session Year at the Parliament Building, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday, October 5, chaired by Deputy Speaker of the DPR Azis Syamsudin.

Present at the plenary meeting were the Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziah, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, and Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly.

After listening to the views of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, the DPR then decided to knock on the bill despite opposition from the Democrats and the Prosperous Justice Party.

The ratification of the Job Creation Law was met with criticism from many parties, especially laborers and including a number of civil society coalitions. They held demonstrations in various provinces.
