Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Shakes Northeast Of Yapen . Islands

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 occurred in the northeast of the Yapen Islands in Papua on Sunday, April 17, at 12.49 WIB. According to the BMKG, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea at a depth of 10 km. at coordinates 1.24 South Latitude and 137.04 East Longitude, approximately 111 km northeast of the Yapen Islands. According to the BMKG, the tremors were felt in Biak on a scale of II to III MMI and in Serui on a scale III MMI. On the MMI scale II the vibrations were felt by several people and caused light objects that were hanging to sway and on the MMI scale III the vibrations were felt inside the house, it felt as if a truck was passing. BMKG urges residents to be aware of the possibility of aftershocks.
