2 Prison Officials Help Cai Changpan Escape Convict

JAKARTA - The police have found the alleged involvement of two officers behind the escape of a death sentence convict, Cai Cangphan from the Tangerang Class I Correctional Institution (Lapas). The two prison officers are said to have played a role as equipment providers.

Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Yusri Yunus said the two prison officers had the initials S. They were Warden and PNS of the Tangerang Class I Lapas.

"That he (the two officers) helped buy the equipment, one of which was the water pump," said Yusri to reporters, Friday, October 2.

Information on the alleged involvement of the two officers was based on the results of witness examination. The two of them were ordered to buy equipment and store it back to eliminate traces of the escape.

"He (two officers) received money from the suspect (Cai Changpan). Then he bought it using the address concerned or this guard's employee. Even took him there (Lapas), also took it again which was stored at his residence," said Yusri.

In addition, based on the results of their examination, they claimed to have received hundreds of thousands of rewards. However, to be sure both are still being examined intensively.

"According to the statement he bought it, he got a return of Rp. 100,000, yes, he also delivered Rp. 100,000, that's the statement from the person concerned," he said.

Currently, investigators have also raised the status of the alleged involvement of the officers behind Cai Changpan's escape to investigation. In fact, in the near future there will be a case title to determine the legal status of the two.

"Yes, we are still exploring. Hopefully the case is resolved and the status can be raised from witness to suspect," he said.

Previously it was reported, the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjen PAS) temporarily disabled 2 commanders on duty at the Class I Tangerang Correctional Institution (Lapas). This is the aftermath of the officers' negligence who fell asleep when Cai Changpan fled.

"The Head of Security at the Class I Tangerang Prison and also the Commander of the Guard at the time of the incident, the two watch commanders have been temporarily suspended," Head of Public Relations and Protocol at the Directorate General of Pas, Rika Aprianti, told VOI, Thursday, October 1.

The two of them were examined intensively to look for other allegations that the police found when holding the crime scene (TKP).

"(They) were stationed at the Banten Ministry of Law and Human Rights office for the purpose of examination," he said.

Cai Changpan alias Antoni managed to escape from the Tangerang Class I Prison on Monday, September 14. He escaped by making a hole in the wall and entering the sewer. In the cell were found shovels and several other tools that were thought to have been used to escape.

Quoted from the Supreme Court (MA) directory, Cai Changpan alias Antoni was sentenced to death by the Tangerang District Court on July 19, 2017 for a drug case. This death row inmate then submitted an appeal to the Banten High Court on September 28, 2017, but was rejected.
