Sports Or Athletes Want To Depart Independently To SEA Games 2021, PPON Review Team Leader: It's Decided Not To Depart

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) has determined 31 sports that will be dispatched to the 2021 SEA Games Hanoi. This decision was taken after obtaining the results of the analysis from the National Sports Achievement Improvement Review Team (PPON).

A total of 31 sports consist of 14 sports that are in the Great Design of National Sports (DBON) and 18 non-DBON sports. There were 14 other sports that were finally decided not to be dispatched.

Recently, there has been talk that athletes from sports that were not dispatched by the government would still fly to Hanoi independently. This discourse is the Head of the PPON Review Team, Prof. Dr. Moch. Asmawi.

He explained that plans for sports or athletes to depart independently would not be realized. He said, This is already the responsibility of the government.

"After all, this is a government policy. So it has been decided that the independent one should not be sent," said Asmawi, as quoted from the official website of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Friday, April 8.

Previously, Asmawi had re-explained the matter of determining the sport which was finally dispatched to the 2021 SEA Games. He emphasized that this decision was taken based on the results of a review from a team consisting of academics from the Jakarta State University, Surabaya State University, Bandung Indonesia Education University, sports practitioners, committee Indonesian National Sports (KONI) and the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI).

The review does not only go through an interview process with sports, but this team also has data and has a track record.

"The data is the most recent multi-event, otherwise we'll also see the track record in the official championships," Asmawi explained.

Asmawi also re-explained why the 14 sports were ultimately not dispatched. The athletes from these sports were not dispatched because they had no track record of achievement and had no chance of winning a medal at the upcoming 2021 SEA Games.

"That is a message from the government that is non-negotiable, why is it because the upstream is the Olympics," he said.
