Megawati Soekarnoputri's Request For Women In Politics

JAKARTA - The Chairperson of the PDI-P, Megawati Soekarnoputri, asked Indonesian women not to lose to men, including in the political world. Megawati made this statement when she received her Honoris Causa Doctoral degree from Soka University, Tokyo, Japan.

Initially, Mega said she asked women to have the courage to make decisions like men. He also talked about his initial position as party leader, which at that time no one had followed his footsteps.

"I was always laughed at when I became party leader. Because women (are judged) to do nothing," said Mega as quoted in a written statement, Wednesday, January 8.

According to the fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia, women should have the same opportunities as men. This understanding, he said, is based on the values of Pancasila, which reads, "just and civilized humanity".

So, he added, women should not only take care of kitchen problems and care for children, but they should also have the right to be involved in politics and he implanted this understanding in himself.

"But I said to myself. A woman is different from a man. A woman is smarter, smarter, and she can be a mother who loves her children, but also she can be involved in politics," he said, adding that the result of her courage to enter the world political.

"As a result I became the first female president. Not only in Indonesia, maybe also in parts of Southeast Asia. So don't be shy. The beautiful ones. Women have to say, I will not lose to men"

Currently, a number of female figures are active in the political arena. Among them are Grace Natalie who is the chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party, as well as, Chairman of the DPR, Puan Maharani, who is the chairman of the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, in the 2019-2024 period, the number of women in parliament reached 118 out of a total of 575 people. This number increased compared to the previous period which only filled 97 seats.

Back in Megawati, the awarding of the Honoris Causa Doctor from Soka University, Tokyo, Japan, was the ninth.

Previously, he had won a similar degree from eight universities, both from Indonesia and abroad.

The eight universities are Doctor Honoris Causa from Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan in 2001; Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Russia in 2003; Korea Maritime and Ocean University, South Korea in 2015.

In addition, Mega also received the same degree from Padjadjaran University Bandung in 2016; Padang State University in 2017; Mokpo National University, South Korea in 2017; Institute of Domestic Government in 2018; and Fujian Normal University, China in 2018.
