Towards Tenjo Forest, Police Hunt Chasing Cai Changpan, A Dead Sentenced Inmate

JAKARTA - The police are continuing to search for the whereabouts of Cai Changpan, a death sentence convict who escaped from the Tangerang Class I Correctional Institution (Lapas). The search process focused on the Tenjo forest, Bogor, West Java.

"Until now, the team is still pursuing, we are focusing on the Tenjo forest area," said Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Yusri Yunus to reporters, Thursday, October 1.

The search for Cai Changpan was focused towards the forest following the testimony of the results of the witness examination. Because after returning home to meet his wife and children, Cai Changpan immediately rushed to leave his residence.

"The person concerned was informed that some of the residents we studied had entered the forest there," he said.

Apart from that, the joint team also searched for potential hiding places. This was done to narrow the space for Cai Changpan.

"While we have several teams to focus there, while we are exploring the possibility of running to other places," he said.

Cai Changpan is known to have returned to his home in the Bogor area, West Java. His whereabouts were discovered based on his wife's examination.

"Because the interval between him and his escape was about 4-5 hours, he arrived at his residence in the Tenjo area, Bogor," Yusri continued to reporters, Tuesday, September 29.

Cai Changpan alias Antoni managed to escape from the Tangerang Class I Prison on Monday, September 14. He escaped by making a hole in the wall and entering the sewer. In the cell were found shovels and several other tools that were thought to have been used to escape.

Quoted from the Supreme Court (MA) directory, Cai Changpan alias Antoni was sentenced to death by the Tangerang District Court on July 19, 2017 for a drug case. This death row inmate then submitted an appeal to the Banten High Court on September 28, 2017, but was rejected.

Cai Changpan was found guilty of a case of methamphetamine drugs with 1,135 plastic packs of evidence. The total weight of methamphetamine is stated in the court decision to reach 135 kilograms.
