BMKG: Beware Of Active Earthquake Zones That Have The Potential To Trigger A Tsunami
JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati appealed to the public to be aware of the active zone of the earthquake that triggered the tsunami during the 2022 Eid homecoming period.
Dwikorita in the Working Meeting and Hearing Meeting of Commission V DPR said that there are several active earthquake zones that can be estimated from the analysis of seismic conditions for the last 6 months for the period October 2021-March 2022.
He explained that the zones that have the potential to experience an active zone earthquake are Aceh to Nias, then West Sumatra to the Mentawai Islands, Bengkulu to Lampung, the Sunda Strait to Banten. According to him, this seismic area is increasingly active, and the need for more vigilance.
In addition, the active earthquake zones that need to be watched out for are in West Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, to Maluku and Papua.
"What needs to be noticed is that some of these earthquakes can be related to megathrusts, or to seafloor earthquakes so that the potential for a tsunami is still possible. Even though we don't predict when it will happen, everything can't be predicted, just be prepared," said Dwikorita as quoted by Antara. , Wednesday, April 6th.
For this readiness, Dwikorita said the only airport that is currently most prepared to deal with a tsunami with all its facilities is Yogyakarta International Airport.
As for other airports, according to him, there are still many things that need to be perfected. Especially evacuation routes and evacuation sites.
"Like at Ngurah Rai (Airport), evacuation routes have begun to be arranged and evacuation sites have begun to be prepared. But other airports need more attention and also several ports," said Dwikorita.
