Perindo Assesses The Issues Of Presidential Term 3 Dangerous Periods For The Nation: 'Batman' Trap For Jokowi
JAKARTA - The chairman of the DPP Perindo Party, Yusuf Lakaseng, considers the issue of a three-term presidential term very dangerous for the Indonesian people and President Joko Widodo.
"Therefore, I suspect that the issue of extending the presidential term is a 'batman trap' for President Jokowi," Yusuf said in a written statement quoted by Antara, Wednesday, April 6.
He assessed that the current political and economic situation is very unfavorable because the people are experiencing anxiety and difficulties in life, due to rising prices of goods, especially basic needs and fuel oil (BBM).
According to him, the effort to extend the president's term of office can only be reached by amending the 1945 Constitution.
He considered that amending the constitution is indeed very possible, but the need for changes is not due to the will of the powers that want to extend their term of office or increase the periodization of power.
"Changes to the constitution must be based on in-depth studies from experts and statesmen over a long period of time. The study was carried out after the current constitution was deemed no longer meeting the needs of the times," he said.
Yusuf emphasized that amending the limitation on the presidential term of office is taboo because it violates the ethical boundaries of the nation's agreement created by the reforms.
According to him, Indonesia was traumatized by the unrestricted power of the New Order and the 1998 reform movement corrected the New Order and gave birth to an attitude for amendments to the 1945 Constitution which stipulates that the President's term of office is limited to two terms.
Yusuf said the Perindo Party input only wanted President Jokowi to have a "legacy" who was remembered as a statesman, a popular leader who succeeded in bringing Indonesia to progress.
