The Sequel To The Legendary Game A Monkey Island Is Coming Back This Year
JAKARTA - One of the best video game series of all time is coming back in 2022 with some of its main original creatives. Return to Monkey Island is a "game by Ron Gilbert," setting the story of a point-and-click comedy adventure in the late 80's.
On Monday, April 4, Gilbert announced that a sequel to A Monkey Island was coming soon. Gilbert has written and directed the original game, The Secret of Monkey Island. He was also the director, programmer and designer on the sequel, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.
Gilbert is now back working on the series he is most familiar with as co-designer and co-writer with fellow Monkey Island veteran Dave Grossman.
Return to Monkey Island is being developed by studio Gilbert's Terrible Toybox, in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games, the legendary studio label that Disney revived in early 2021.
The announcement trailer doesn't reveal anything about the story or why Ron Gilbert agreed to make another Monkey Island game after so many years, but it will follow in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.
Gilbert revealed separately that he had actually been working on Return to Monkey Island for the past two years, "in secret."
