The Cause Of The Collapse Of A Building In Slipi To Seek Indications Of Negligence

JAKARTA - The cause of the collapsing incident of a four-story building in the Slipi area of West Jakarta was revealed. Based on the results of the case where the incident occurred, there is a strong allegation of the collapse of the building due to weathering due to corrosion or rusting of the steel supports.

Head of Forensic Metallurgical Ballistics, Puslabfor Bareskim, Kombes Ulung Kanjaya said the cause of corrosion was due to stagnant water seeping into the concrete structure of the building. Then, it is exposed to steel poles, causing weathering to occur.

The allegation of weathering as the cause of the collapse of the building was reinforced by the finding of steel joints in corrosion conditions. In fact, if you look at the condition of the steels, it is said, the rusting process has been going on for a long time.

"Water (seeps) into the concrete structure so that the joints of the poles have weathered due to the corrosion process," said Ulung in Jakarta, Wednesday, January 8.

The cause of corrosion, it is said, is due to a leak in the concrete part of the building. Moreover, the unavailability of drains from the upper floors exacerbates the situation so that the load supported by the steel supports is getting heavier.

With the occurrence of corrosion and weathering, the impact on the strength of the support pile is reduced. Then, the building collapsed.

"Maybe the structure (of the building) is not good in terms of (the channel) of water. So that trapped water adds to the burden of the building structure," said Ulung.

With the alleged cause of the collapse of the building, the police also investigated whether there was an element of negligence behind the incident. Until now, four witnesses, ranging from owners to mini market employees have been questioned.

Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Yusri Yunus said, later from the results of the examination and instructions and other information, it can be concluded that the cause of the collapse of the four-story building was due to negligence or purely due to natural conditions.

"We'll just wait for the results of the investigation, whether there is negligence on the part of the contractor or is there a situation," said Yusri, adding that the investigation was carried out together with a number of related parties.

"For the time being, the team is also working, both from the National Police and related stakeholders to investigate what caused the collapse," he said.

Previously it was reported that a four-story building located on Jalan Brigjen Katamso, Palmerah, West Jakarta, collapsed without clear reasons. The incident occurred at 09.10 WIB.

As a result of the incident, three people became victims. Two of them were online motorcycle taxi drivers who suffered fractures in their arms and legs. While another one only suffered minor injuries.
