Karim Benzema Resigns From Supercopa De Espana Due To Injury
MADRID - Karim Benzema has been dropped from the Real Madrid squad which will compete in the Supercopa de Espana event in Saudi Arabia this week. The French forward has injured his leg.
Benzema, who turns 32 in December, has been brilliant with Los Blancos in the last 18 months. He scored 30 goals in all competitions last season and in 24 games this season he has scored 16 goals.
The man of Algerian descent has become an important figure and the most brilliant player for Madrid since Cristiano Ronaldo was sold to Juvetus in the summer of 2018. His prowess under coach Zinedine Zidane was demonstrated in almost every match. It is not surprising that he is often the first choice than Luka Jovic.
"After a series of tests carried out on our player Karim Benzema today (Monday, January 6, Spanish time) by the Medical Services of Real Madrid, he sustained a semimembranosus muscle injury due to a bruise on his left leg. Delayed evolution," said a Madrid statement. Espana, Tuesday.
The striker has spent more than a decade at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu since joining from French club Lyon. Madrid's third captain has scored 238 goals in 489 appearances.
Apart from Benzema, Los Blancos are confirmed to lose Gareth Bale, Marcelo, Mariano Diaz, James Rodriguez and Brahim Diaz en route to Saudi Arabia.

Previously the Supercopa de Espana event to mark the new season began and was held over two legs between the La Liga champions and the Copa del Rey winners. However, with the new format, now there will be four teams drawn from the top four of the La Liga standings last season.
Real Madrid will meet Valencia on January 8, 2020, while Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid the following day. While the final party will be staged on January 12, 2020.
