Ashleigh Barty's Resignation Shocks Tennis World

JAKARTA - World number one Ashleigh Barty's withdrawal from tennis on Wednesday was met with shock and hope from both current and former greats.

The three-time Grand Slam champion shared a video on social media in which he said he would "step away and pursue another dream".

Karolina Pliskova, who lost to Barty to win Wimbledon last year, congratulated the Australian on a "tremendous career".

"It's a privilege to share the court with you," the Czech former world number one tweeted. "You will be missed."

Three-time Grand Slam champion from Great Britain and former world number one Andy Murray said on Twitter: "So happy for @ashbarty. Desperate for tennis. What a player"

Simona Halep from Romania spoke directly to Barty: "Ash, what can I say, You know I cried right? My friends, I will miss you on tour. You are different, and special, and we shared some amazing moments."

The former world number one speculated what might happen next for Barty: "A Grand Slam champion in golf?!"

Former world number one American Andy Roddick gave a brief reaction, retweeting the announcement with a simple "wow".

The world women's professional tennis association (WTA) thanked Barty "for the indelible mark you left on the court, off the court and in our hearts".

There is also a tribute that shows Barty's popularity among his fellow players.

"Ash, I have no words ..." said Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic.

"Actually you showed your true class leaving tennis in this beautiful way. I am so happy to be able to share the court with you.. tennis will never be the same without you! I admire you as a player and as a person.. wishing only the best for you!"
