Secretary General Of The Inter-Parliamentary Union: Puan Maharani Is A Symbol Of Female Leadership

JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong called the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Puan Maharani as one of the symbols of women's leadership in world forums.

"Puan Maharani's leadership in organizing the IPU is now a symbol of world leadership," said Martin Chungong during a press conference at the location of the IPU 144th Session at BICC Nusa Dua, Bali, as reported by Antara, Saturday, March 19.

She conveyed that the 144th Session of the IPU which took place on March 20-24, 2022 was still held in commemoration of International Women's Day.

Therefore, the figure of Puan Maharani is important because according to Martin Chungong, the Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives can be a role model or role model in realizing gender equality in politics.

“Mrs. Puan is one of the 22 percent female MPs in the world today. We want to celebrate that you are a role model to continue and also improve gender balance in parliament,” said the Secretary General of the IPU.

The issue of gender equality in politics, especially the participation of women as members of parliament, became one of the issues of concern at the 144th Session of the IPU.

In addition, other issues that are also in the spotlight are the impact of climate change, the role of youth in politics, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and the distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations.

Indonesia is hosting the IPU's annual session for the first time.

The IPU is a cross-border inter-parliamentary collaboration which is the second largest democratic forum in the world after the United Nations (UN).

Puan explained that as the host, Indonesia was also in charge of leading the implementation of the 144th Session of the IPU.

"Automatically the Chairman of the DPR RI will lead the entire trial as president of the assembly and of course we hope that through the IPU, Indonesia can lead the achievement of all adopted resolutions to solve global problems," explained Puan.

He explained that his role as chairman of the session put Indonesia in a strategic position.

"IPU in Bali is of course very strategic because as the host, Indonesia can play an active role in discussing and proposing solutions to global problems," said Puan.
