Papuan Police Chief: KNPB Allegedly Provocateurs Riots In Dekai

JAYAPURA - The Papuan Police Chief Inspector General Mathius D Fakhiri said the results of the investigation revealed indications of the involvement of the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) in the rioting that occurred in Dekai, the capital of Yahukimo Regency.

KNPB is one of the organizations that is fighting to free Papua from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

Indeed, there are indications of the involvement of the KNPB in the riots that began with a demonstration against the expansion that took place on Tuesday (15/3), including from a number of video uploads when the action was carried out.

"In addition, there is an affiliation with the Papua Java, Bali and Sumatra Student Alliance (AMP Jabasu) which is also an extension of the KNPB," said Inspector General Fakhiri, quoted by Antara, Friday, March 18.

Despite these indications, members are still continuing to explore in order to reveal the involvement of the KNPB.

As previously reported, the demonstration against the new autonomous region (DOB) which was held at the Kominfo Yahukimo office in Dekai was initially peaceful, but suddenly the demonstrators started burning and destroying shop houses in the vicinity.

Seeing this action, members of the police then took precautionary measures to protect other people, said Fakhiri, adding that as a result two people died, four people were injured including two members of the National Police.

The regional police chief said that only one person has been named a suspect, namely L. Currently, the security situation in Dekai has gradually become safe and community activities have recovered.

"Residents who previously fled to the Yahukimo Police Headquarters in Dekai have returned to their homes," said the Papuan Police Chief.
