Amid The KKB Brutal Terror, Komnas HAM Will Invite Papuan OPM Leaders To Have Peaceful Dialogue

JAKARTA - Chairman of the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Ahmad Taufan Damanik said that his party would invite figures from the Free Papua Organization (OPM) to conduct a peaceful dialogue regarding the situation in Papua.

"OPM will be a priority group for dialogue," said Taufan Damanik, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, March 9.

Komnas HAM will initiate and initiate a peaceful dialogue between the government and the Papuan side. The Papuan parties involved are the OPM, church leaders, community leaders, and traditional leaders.

OPM is the party that will be the priority of the dialogue with the government. Taufan emphasized that the government cannot refuse to start communicating with Papuan independence figures who are still heard by many parties, one of them is Benny Wenda.

“Those who are pro-independence must be invited to a dialogue, they can't if they don't. This upheaval is because there are pro-independence people," he said.

Komnas HAM has established contacts and informed that it will meet Benny Wenda. However, until now, Komnas HAM and the government are still considering the ups and downs of the situation in Papua.

“Our team there often meet and contact each other. They are willing to be facilitated by Komnas HAM. They said they were ready," said Taufan.

Not limited to the OPM, Komnas HAM said it would hold a dialogue with traditional leaders in Papua. In relation to traditional leaders, the issue that has drawn attention is the protection of their ulayat rights.

Taufan hopes that this year his party can start the initial stage of dialogue between the government, OPM, community leaders, church leaders, and traditional leaders.

"Hopefully this year, the initial stages will start from the government, OPM, community leaders, church leaders, and traditional leaders. I'm starting to be able to sit down," said Taufan.

As with the previous Aceh conflict resolution involving Sweden as a third party, Taufan said that Komnas HAM would act as a third party.

"Even though this is a state institution, they still have great respect," said Taufan.
