UNHCR Has Not Been Able To Confirm The Location Of The Shelter For 114 Rohingya Immigrants Who Were Stranded In Bireuen Aceh

BANDA ACEH - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has not been able to confirm the location of the shelter for 114 Rohingya immigrants who were stranded in Bireuen Regency, Aceh.

The Head of Internal and External Relations of UNHCR, Representative of Indonesia, Mitra Suryono in Lhokseumawe, said that until now his party is still coordinating with the Acehnese authorities and other humanitarian organizations regarding the location of the shelter for 114 Rohingya immigrants.

"UNHCR staff are currently in Bireuen and coordinating with local authorities. And our priority is the health of the people, the majority of whom are suspected to be Rohingya refugees who just landed a few days ago," Mitra Suryono said, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, March 8.

Mitra Suryono said all Rohingya immigrants who landed in Bireuen Regency on Sunday (6/3) will undergo a COVID-19 test and quarantine process.

"After quarantine, UNHCR will carry out registration and continue to coordinate with the authorities to provide protection and assistance for these hundreds of Rohingya refugees," said Mitra Suryono.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson for the Task Force for Handling Rohingya Refugees in Lhokseumawe City, Marzuki, said that there is currently no information regarding the plan to transfer 114 Rohingya stranded in Bireuen to the Lhokseumawe Work Training Center (BLK).

"There is no coordination and discourse regarding the transfer of Rohingya immigrants to BLK Lhokseumawe. We are still waiting for further information regarding the location of the shelter for Rohingya immigrants who landed in Bireuen," said Marzuki.
