BMKG Issues Warning Of Potential High Waves Reaching 2.5 Meters In NTT
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of the potential for high waves to occur in five water points in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The height of the sea waves reaches 2.5 meters.
"The potential for waves of 2.5 meters needs to be watched out for because it poses a high risk to fishing boats and barge shipping," said Head of the BMKG Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station Syaeful Hadi in Kupang, Tuesday, quoted from Antara, Tuesday, March 8.
He said this was related to the warning of high waves in the sea waters of NTT which could potentially occur during 8-10 March 2022.
Syaeful explained that waves as high as 2.5 meters are likely to occur at several points in the waters of NTT, namely the western part of the Sumba Strait, the southern part of the Sawu Sea. In addition, the Indian Ocean south of Sumba-Sabu, the waters south of Kupang-Rote, and the Indian Ocean south of Kupang-Rote.
"The potential for high waves is expected to be a concern for fishermen and ship operators to anticipate impacts at sea," he said.
In addition, he said, it is necessary to watch out for the potential for strong winds of more than 15 knots which are also a risk for fishing boats and barges.
Regarding the synoptic wind conditions, Syaeful explained that the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia is dominantly moving from Northwest-Northeast with wind speeds ranging from 5-35 knots.
Meanwhile, in the southern part of Indonesia, the dominant movement is from the Southwest-Northwest at a speed of 5-25 knots. The highest wind speeds were observed in the northern Natuna Sea and the Sulawesi Sea.
