Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska Gives Prize Money To Country: You Are Strong, Amazing
JAKARTA - Ukrainian tennis player, Dayana Yastremska, donated the prize she won at the 2022 Lyon Open for her country which is currently at war with Russia. He wants to provide financial and moral support for Ukrainian citizens.
Yastremska qualified for the final of the Lyon Open, but failed to win the championship trophy. The 21-year-old tennis player actually won the first set from Zhang Shuai with a score of 6-3. Unfortunately, he lost in the next two sets. He surrendered 3-6, 4-6 to the eighth seed from China.
"The prize money I get here will be given to the Ukrainian Foundation to help Ukraine," Yastremska said as quoted by Reuters, as reported by Antara.
"If Ukrainians watch me I want to say 'you guys are so tough, you guys have great passion, and I'm trying to fight for Ukraine," he added.
Yastremska, who won three WTA titles, fled Ukraine with her younger sister with the help of their parents just days after the invasion began on February 24.
He admitted to spending two nights in an underground parking lot before fleeing.
"I want to thank everyone who supports Ukraine," concluded Yastremska, who draped her country's flag during the trophy presentation.
