A Number Of Countries Withdraw, The 2020 Thomas And Uber Cup Are Officially Postponed
JAKARTA - The International Badminton Federation (BWF) announced Tuesday that the implementation of the 2020 Thomas and Uber Cup, which was scheduled to be held on October 3-11 in Aarhus, Denmark, was officially postponed.
This decision was taken following the withdrawal of a number of countries from the badminton championship for the most prestigious men's and women's teams in the world.
"After full consultation with hosts Denmark, BWF has made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Thomas and Uber Cup Final in Aarhus, Denmark," said an official statement from BWF.
At least six countries have decided to withdraw from the championship, namely Indonesia, which is the top seed, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia and Russia.
The BWF is currently looking for alternative dates to reschedule the tournament, but it is hoped that it will take place before 2021.
Meanwhile, the Denmark Open 2020 in Odense, which is one of the BWF World Tour events, will continue as planned on October 13-18. The tournament will be used as an opportunity for BWF to implement the COVID-19 health protocol in restarting the international badminton tournament.
BWF is currently also continuing to study the fate of the continuation of three World Tour tournaments in Asia, including the BWF World Finals. BWF will announce it further.
"BWF is looking for possible alternative dates to reschedule the World Men's and Women's Team Championships, but not before 2021," said BWF.
