Jokowi: Supreme Court Has A Crucial Role In Providing Legal Certainty And A Deterrent Effect For Corruptors And The Legal Mafia
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the role of the Supreme Court (MA) as a guardian of justice through its policies is very crucial.
This was conveyed by Jokowi when delivering his remarks at the Special Session of the 2021 Supreme Court Annual Report on Tuesday, February 22.
The former governor of DKI Jakarta said that from the various policies taken by the Supreme Court, the people then felt legal justice. Meanwhile, corruptors and legal mafia often get a deterrent effect for their actions.
"The role of the Supreme Court as a guardian of justice is very crucial in supporting the transformation of Indonesia that results in landmark decisions," Jokowi said on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube show.
"That provides fair legal certainty for the community, which provides fair legal certainty for business actors and investors, which protects state assets and other public assets and provides a deterrent effect for corruptors and legal mafias that injure the sense of justice," " he added.
Even so, President Jokowi wants the Supreme Court to continue to make strategic efforts in reducing legal barriers in order to accelerate economic development.
There are several ways he mentioned, namely accelerating the handling of civil cases through a simple lawsuit mechanism, encouraging consistency of decisions, and reforming the implementation of decisions.
In addition, Jokowi also asked that alternative models of case settlement be carried out for efficiency. One of them, by prioritizing mediation and restorative justice.
"Alternative models of case settlement need to be applied to reduce the burden on the court," he stressed.
"Prioritizing mediation as an alternative to resolving civil disputes, promoting restorative justice for criminal cases and a dialogue process involving perpetrators of victims and related parties in a professional, transparent and accountable manner so that fair law enforcement can be realized," said Jokowi.
Lastly, Jokowi ordered the Supreme Court to consistently strengthen access to justice for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and persons with disabilities in every court. All these steps must be taken by the Supreme Court in order to realize welfare and social stability in the community.
"We believe that effective law enforcement efforts by the Supreme Court will contribute to realizing prosperity and social stability, strengthening the democratic system and accelerating the transformation towards an advanced Indonesia that we aspire to," he concluded.
