Azis Syamsuddin Sentenced To 3.5 Years, KPK Thinks Next Steps

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) appreciates the judge's decision to give a 3.5-year sentence to former Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Parliament Azis Syamsuddin in the case management case in Central Lampung.

Acting KPK Spokesperson for Enforcement, Ali Fikri, said that the judge's consideration at the verdict hearing today or Thursday, February 17, has taken over the analysis of the demands of the KPK Public Prosecutor (JPU).

"KPK appreciates the decision of the panel of judges who have examined and decided the case of the accused Azis Syamsuddin," said Ali in a written statement, Thursday, February 17.

Even so, the KPK will now think about the legal steps that will be taken in the future. This, said Ali, was done by studying the considerations of the panel of judges.

"Currently, the prosecutor's team is still thinking about the next legal step after studying all the considerations of the panel of judges in the case," he said. As previously reported, Azis Syamsuddin was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 250 million, subsidiary to four months in prison. In addition, Azis' political rights were also revoked for four years from the time he finished serving his prison term.

He was proven to have given bribes worth IDR 3,099 billion and USD 36,000, bringing the total to around IDR 3,619 billion, to former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Stepanus Robin Pattuju and advocate Maskur Husain. The goal is to take care of the case involving him in Central Lampung.

The verdict is lower than the demands of the KPK Public Prosecutor (JPU) who requested that Azis be sentenced to four years and two months in prison, plus a fine of IDR 250 million subsidiary to six months in prison.
