Mark Zuckerberg Appoints Former British Deputy Prime Minister As President Of Global Affairs

JAKARTA - Meta Platforms Inc CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post on Wednesday, February 16, that he had promoted policy chief Nick Clegg to a larger role to lead all policy matters. This decision signifies that Zuckerberg's involvement in the area is now less.

"We need senior leaders at my own level (for our products) and Sheryl (for our business) who can lead and represent us on all of our policy issues globally," Zuckerberg wrote, referring to Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg.

Clegg, who was Deputy Prime Minister of the UK from 2010 to 2015, joined Facebook in 2018 to run its global policy organization. He has chaired issues such as Facebook's content and election policies and spearheaded the creation of the company's independent content supervisory board.

"Nick will now lead our company on all of our policy matters, including how we interact with governments as they consider adopting new policies and regulations, and how we make this public case for our products and work," Zuckerberg said in the post.

The Meta CEO said the changes will allow him to focus more on leading the company when building new products while Sandberg will focus on the success of his business.

Clegg's increased role as "president, global affairs," reporting his duties directly to Zuckerberg and Sandberg, comes ahead of midterm elections in the US last November.

Clegg will also be tasked with tackling regulatory issues as the company focuses on building the metaverse, a futuristic idea of an immersive virtual environment.

"The next few years will be an important time for our company and our industry as new rules for the internet are written around the world, and as we begin our journey to help build the metaverse," Sandberg wrote in a post.
