Maluku-Papua Seng GDP Growth Opposites, Highest In Indonesia Thanks To Nickel And Gold

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that Maluku and Papua were the regions with the largest gross domestic product (GDP) growth in Indonesia throughout 2021 with an increase of 10.09 percent compared to the 2021 period.

Head of BPS Margo Yuwono said the level was higher than the book growth of Java Island which was 3.66 percent. Likewise, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi were respectively at the level of 3.18 percent, 3.18 percent, and 5.7 percent.

Meanwhile, for the areas of Bali and Nusa Tenggara, growth only increased slightly by 0.07 percent due to the tourism sector still not recovering.

“This high growth mainly occurred in North Maluku due to an increase in metal ore mining activities, particularly the production of nickel ore, gold ore and silver ore. Meanwhile in Papua there is an increase in metal ore mining from copper and gold, as well as a surge in consumption to support PON activities there," said Margo in a press statement via online channels, Monday, February 7.

However, the contribution of the two regions in Eastern Indonesia is still relatively small in the overall GDP structure, which is 2.49 percent.

"The spatial structure of Indonesia's economy during 2021 is still dominated by the provincial group on the island of Java, which contributes to GDP of 57.89 percent," said Margo.

Meanwhile, Sulawesi Region contributed 6.89 percent, Kalimantan 8.25 percent, Sumatra 21.70 percent, and Bali and Nusa Tenggara 2.78 percent.
