Pertamina Geothermal Strengthens ESG Towards World Class Green Energy Company
JAKARTA - Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) as the backbone of geothermal development in Indonesia continues to improve to realize its vision of becoming a World Class Green Energy Company. To realize this vision, PGE has consistently prioritized the sustainability aspect by strengthening its position in the application of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles or frameworks in all of its business activities.
Pertamina Geothermal Energy President Director Ahmad Yuniarto emphasized that PGE is highly committed to maintaining environmental sustainability, contributing to national and regional economic growth and implementing good corporate governance.
"Geothermal business is a business that has a long-term orientation by producing environmentally friendly renewable energy," said Ahmad in a written statement, Monday, February 7.
Therefore, said Ahmad, in line with global climate change, the choice to use renewable clean energy becomes a priority and in maintaining its sustainability it is very necessary to apply the principles or framework of ESG.
At the government level, as part of the world community, Indonesia is currently working hard to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Last year, the Government of Indonesia revised the target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions - with its own efforts - listed in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) from 26 percent to 29 percent by 2030, one of the focuses of which is in the energy sector through the development of new and renewable energy (EBT). including geothermal.
As part of the government's grand scenario, as well as to realize its commitment, currently in the geothermal working area PGE has an installed geothermal capacity of 1,877 MW, consisting of 672 MW operated by PGE alone and 1,205 through Joint Operation Contracts. The installed capacity has the potential to illuminate around 2.1 million homes. The green energy conversion has the potential to reduce carbon emissions of around 9.7 million tons of CO2e per year.
Biodiversity development with local wisdom is also the focus of PGE in each of its operational areas, one of the biodiversity developments that has become a national benchmark is the Kamojang Eagle Conservation Center (PKEK) in the Kamojang Area, Garut, West Java. In addition, PGE also conserves chrysanthemums and yaki monkeys in the Lahendong area, North Sulawesi, and cultivates saburai goats in the Ulubelu area, Lampung.
"Where the earth is stepped on, there the sky is upheld, growing with the community and the environment is a theme that strengthens the company's commitment to the environment and the surrounding community as well as a form of support in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia," added Ahmad.
The results of these various efforts have also received the highest recognition from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia with 11 consecutive GOLD PROPER titles for the PGE Kamojang Area.
