The Situation On The Ukraine-Russia Border Tenses, The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Monitors The Condition Of 131 Indonesian Citizens And Prepares A Contingency Plan

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor the situation on the Ukrainian border with Russia, as well as ensure the safety conditions of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Ukraine.

Conditions on Ukraine's border with Russia have tensed in recent times, along with the deployment of military and weaponry to the region, involving NATO and the US fearing an invasion of Moscow.

Most recently, the United States will send nearly 3,000 additional troops to Poland and Romania to bolster NATO allies Eastern Europe, in the face of what Washington describes as a Russian threat to attack Ukraine, US officials said Wednesday.

Regarding the condition of Indonesian citizens in Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said their condition was safe and always under the monitoring of the Indonesian Embassy in Kyiv. Conditions in the Ukrainian capital were also mentioned so far as normal as usual.

"It is recorded that there are 131 Indonesian citizens in Ukraine spread across several cities. Most of them are in Kyiv 78 people. Until now, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor the development of the situation in the country," explained Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Judha Nugraha in a virtual press statement. , Thursday 3 February.

"We will always monitor the existing situation and we have also developed a contingency plan in case of an escalation in Ukraine," continued Judha.

He further explained that this contingency plan is in accordance with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Regulation No. 5 of 2018 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Abroad, in which each representative office of the Republic of Indonesia prepares a contingency plan.

This contingency plan consists of three stages, emergency 3, emergency 2 and emergency 1 with the parameters of each step already determined by representatives of the Republic of Indonesia abroad.

"The Indonesian Embassy is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives in countries close to Ukraine for contingency plans if there is an escalation," he said.

Judha confirmed that the Indonesian Embassy in Kyiv, which also serves as Armenia and Georgia, had issued an appeal for Indonesian citizens who were there to report themselves to the Indonesian Embassy, to update data while maintaining communication.
