Is Indonesia Ready To Develop A Nuclear Power Plant? Faisal Basri: Just Try

JAKARTA - Nuclear power plants (PLTN) have been widely used by developed countries to drive their power plants. However, Indonesia, as the fourth most populous country in the world, has not yet used nuclear power plants to date.

There are various reasons behind the not yet use of nuclear power plants in Indonesia. One of them, the community is still worried about its security.

Senior Economist at the University of Indonesia, Faisal Basri, assessed that it is time for Indonesia to think about using nuclear as a power plant. Because, in terms of cost it is cheaper than coal.

"It is time for nuclear energy to think about. Because nuclear energy is the cheapest, even cheaper than coal. Now, what are the risks left. During the era of former President Gus Dur, this option was opened again," he said during a hearing with Commission VI. , at the DPR Building, Parliament Complex, Monday, August 31.

In fact, said the INDEF economist, the Japanese government has allowed the Fukushima nuclear power plant to operate again. This was done after an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale in 2011 destroyed the Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) power plant, Fukushima Dai-ichi and caused a leak in the nuclear reactor.

"Technology is increasingly developing. Japan has decided to close its nuclear, now it's reopening, everywhere is opening again. Technology still allows the risk to be as small as possible up to 0.0 percent. So the Indonesian government please reconsider," he said.

Previously, Commission VI member Evita Nursanty asked whether it was time for Indonesia to use nuclear power as a power plant. This is because various countries have done this.

"Pak Faisal I want to ask whether it is time for us to implement the nuclear power plant? We know that nuclear has started to be used in various countries. Meanwhile, Indonesia has not started," said Evita.

Here are three countries that use the most nuclear power plants in the world:

1. United States

The superpower country, the United States, currently has 104 nuclear power plants to illuminate its cities. Uncle Sam's country is also the country that uses the most nuclear power, beating other developing countries.

2. France

In second place is France. This country uses 59 nuclear power plants to supply electricity to all of its citizens. France is forced to have a lot of nuclear reactors because this country does not have any other source of energy to generate electricity other than nuclear.

3. Japan

Japan is the third largest country that has 55 nuclear power plants. The Japanese government considers that the NPP reactor is the most strategic power plant in Japan.
