When Will The Aftershocks Stop? This Is What A Researcher From BRIN Said
JAKARTA - A researcher from the Geotechnology Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Eko Yulianto said that aftershocks would continue to occur until equilibrium conditions were reached again.
According to him, the repeated earthquake in Banten may be an aftershock of an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 that occurred on January 14, 2022, 53 kilometers southwest of the Sumur District in Pandeglang Regency.
"For the aftershocks from the January 14, 2022 earthquake, the energy released by the broken earth's crust will gradually decrease until the equilibrium condition is reached again," Eko said when contacted by Antara, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 19.
Eko said that it was impossible to know for sure when the aftershocks would end, but in previous earthquakes, the energy release process usually took several weeks. can cause earthquakes of different scales. The larger the scale of the earthquake, the longer the recurrence period.
"Earthquakes of magnitude 2 to 3 occur almost every day, only the location of the epicenter moves randomly," said Eko.
Previously, the Coordinator for Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Daryono explained that the number of aftershocks did not mean that it would lead to a large earthquake.
Aftershocks usually have a smaller strength than the main earthquake and will get smaller and less frequent over time.
