Speaker Of The House Of Representatives Madam: The House Of Representatives Is Open To Receive Input On The TPKS Bill

JAKARTA - Chairperson of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, has asked the public to continue providing input to the DPR regarding the Bill on the Elimination of Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence (TPKS). As is known, the TPKS Bill was passed as a DPR Initiative Bill.

"We in the DPR will continue to hear what the people's aspirations are so that we can together prevent all forms of sexual violence around us," said Puan in a plenary meeting, which was attended by women activists who are members of the Network to Defend the Rights of Victims of Sexual Violence, Tuesday January 18th.

Representatives of women activists who attended included Sukma Foundation, KAPAL Institute (Alternative Education Circle) for Women, Migrant Care, Kusdiyah from LKK NU, Mahardika Women, Suluh Perempuan, and the DKI Jakarta Women's School.

"Thank you for coming. Hopefully our mutual cooperation can be useful for the nation and the state in fighting for the rights of women and children," said the first woman who served as Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

After greeting the women activists, Puan invited representatives from each faction in the DPR to express their views regarding the TPKS Bill.

After undergoing the plenary session, Puan again emphasized that community involvement is very important in preventing sexual violence. According to him, the future is a crucial time. Therefore, Puan admitted that her party still needed input from various parties to finalize the TPKS Bill.

“I ensure that the DPR will always be open to hearing. I know many would like to see this bill become law, and so am I. Help us by evaluating the process of discussing the TPKS Bill so that it can become a product of legislation that is able to bring a sense of security and justice together," he concluded.

Last week (12/1), Puan also received full support from representatives of women activists. This support was obtained when they invited them to a hearing on the urgency of the TPKS Bill. One of the representatives in the event, the Women's Ulema Congress Network (KUPI) Nur Rofiah, confirmed her support for the Chairperson of the DPR, Puan Maharani.

She said that the benefit of women is actually a perspective that must be included in Islamic thought which always aims to realize the system of life as a gift for all humans, including women.

“Women have reproductive systems and biological experiences that are different from men. The TPKS Bill must be concerned with the experiences and biological impacts experienced by women. The proof of faith in Allah is by trying to realize the benefit," he said.
