Malaysia Loses IDR 8.4 Trillion Per Day During PKP COVID-19 Pandemic

JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Malaysia suffered a loss of RM2.4 billion or Rp8.4 trillion during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (PKP) in curbing COVID-19.

"During the implementation of the Movement Control Order, I was informed by the Governor of Bank Negara, Malaysia a loss of 2.4 billion Malaysian ringgit or Rp8.4 trillion a day and the country's economy will collapse if the economic sectors are not reopened immediately," he said. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a special speech to celebrate the 63rd Anniversary of Malaysia's Independence, launched Antara, Monday, 31 August.

Muhyiddin is very worried about the situation. If not handled properly, many will lose their jobs and livelihoods.

"The impact is very bad for you," he said.

Therefore, he continued, the government decided to gradually reopen the country's economic sectors.

In addition, to help revive the economy, the government is implementing a National Economic Regeneration Plan or Generator amounting to 35 billion Malaysian ringgit.

"Alhamdulillah, today the economic sectors of this country have started to improve with more than 15 million workers have returned to work. The unemployment rate experienced a reduction trend from 5.3 percent in May 2020 to 4.9 percent in June," he said.

He is aware that many economic sectors are severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and need time to fully recover.

"I am confident that the country's economic recovery trend will continue to recover faster," he said.
