Man City Beat Chelsea Through De Bruyne's Goal
JAKARTA – The dominance of Manchester City in the English Premier League stage continues. The latest three points they managed to bring home after bending Chelsea as their closest competitor on the standings board.
Pep Guardiola's squad won 1-0 at home to the Blues in matchday 22 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, January 15 night. Kevin De Bruyne scored the only goal for the home team.
The Belgian player scored the winning goal for his team in the 70th minute. He picked up Joao Cancelo's pass and followed it with a curling shot that rounded the visitors' goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga.
"He has won three Premier Leagues and many other awards but I want him to get more because I know he can do it. He has everything. He's lost a bit of confidence this season, but he knows what he can do," said Guardiola.
The 30-year-old midfielder has been involved in five goals against Chelsea in the last five meetings. In detail, he made four goals against his former team along with one assist.
The Chelsea goal is indeed an easy target for De Bruyne. He netted a total of five goals, equivalent to the number of goals he scored against Arsenal.
This victory makes City's path to the title increasingly open. They now lead the top of the table with 56 points or 13 points clear of Chelsea who fill second place and 14 points over Liverpool who are in third place.
However, Liverpool still have two games left.
The result against Chelsea extended City's winning streak in the Premier League. In total they have carved a record of 12 matches unbeaten in a row.
City only play again on Saturday, January 22, next week when they travel to St. Mary's against Southampton. Meanwhile, Chelsea will visit Brighton & Hove Albion headquarters on Tuesday, January 18.
