Reject Chemical Castration Of Rapists Of 13 Female Students, Chairul Anam: Not In Accordance With Human Rights Principles

JAKARTA - Commissioner for Monitoring/Investigation of the National Human Rights Commission, Mohammad Choirul Anam, explained the reason for his rejection of the chemical castration sentence for the defendant Herry Wirawan, the perpetrator who raped 13 female students.

"This (chemical castration) is not in accordance with human rights principles and the spirit of legal change in us," said Choirul Anam in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Thursday, January 13.

His party also objected to the demand for the death penalty against Herry. "For every threat of death penalty, Komnas HAM always refuses," he said.

Regarding the handling of the case, Komnas HAM supports severe punishment for the perpetrators. However, not in the form of a death sentence.

He also hopes that there will be a change in legal policy. "We hope there will be a change in policy," said Choirul.

Previously, the West Java High Prosecutor's Office demanded that Herry Wirawan be sentenced to death for raping 13 female students.

Herry was also demanded to be given a chemical castration sentence as well as punishment to pay a fine and pay restitution for the victim.

The prosecutor also demanded that all of Herry's assets and assets be confiscated and auctioned off to finance the needs of the victims and their babies.
