Yogyakarta Transportation Agency Bans The Use Of Electric Scooters On Highways

YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Transportation Service has confirmed that it will ban electric scooters, which have recently been rented out at a number of tourist attractions. An electric scooter is not a vehicle that can be used on the road.

"The rules in the laws and ministerial regulations are quite clear, namely they are not allowed to be used on the highway," said Head of the Yogyakarta City Transportation Service Agus Arif as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, January 11.

Agus also asked anyone, both individuals and parties who rent electric vehicles not to be used on the highway but only in certain areas.

“For example, in residential areas or on special lanes that are indeed provided for these types of vehicles. If in Jakarta, there is already a special route, but in Yogyakarta there is not because the road is narrow," he said.

As a vehicle that is included in the motorized vehicle category, electric scooters are classified as unstable vehicles so they are considered dangerous when run on the highway.

"We love the public and tourists more by prioritizing their safety and security aspects. Either the vehicle is privately owned or rented, but in principle it should not be used on the highway," he said.

Agus even emphasized that he would take the necessary actions together with the police to "secure" if there were still electric scooters being used on the highway.

“Solely for the safety and security of users. We hope that the public will understand. We are not restraining but solely for safety," he said.

Previously, Yogyakarta Deputy Mayor Heroe Poerwadi said he would arrange the existence of electric scooters in Malioboro and in the Tugu area which is mostly rented out to tourists.

These arrangements include limiting the number, allowed lanes and operating hours so that scooter users are safe as well as the public or other tourists do not feel disturbed.
