Regent Of Jember: Causes Of Flash Floods Due To Garbage And Siltation
JEMBER - The Regent of Jember, East Java, Hendy Siswanto said the cause of the flash floods that hit housing in the Mangli Village area was due to piles of garbage and river silting, as well as high river sediments. As a result, the river is unable to accommodate the water discharge until it overflows into settlements.
"Heaps of garbage at the Semangir River floodgate leading to housing are also the cause of the blockage of water flow, so that water overflows to the surface," he said while reviewing the location of the worst flash flood at Bumi Mangli Permai Housing in Mangli Village, Kaliwates District, Jember Regency, quoted by Antara, Monday. , January 10.
Regent Hendy was accompanied by the Head of Jember Police, AKBP Hery Purnomo and Dandim 0824 Jember, Lt. Col. Inf. Batara C. Pangaribuan visited the location of the banjir bandang to analyze the impact of the flood which caused the Bumi Mangli Permai Housing to be badly damaged.
He said the first step in handling the disaster was to work with the TNI and Polri immediately to help residents clean up flood debris and check the Semangir River.
"There we saw that there was siltation and high sediment, so it needed to be normalized. We also saw that there was 40 cm of garbage at the sluice gate leading to the housing," he said.
The overflow of the Semangir River resulted in flooding as high as 100-130 cm which hit residential areas in Mangli Village due to the silting of the river.
"After we checked directly, the depth of the river was only 1 meter, so that when it rains a little and for a long time, the river water will overflow into residential areas," he said.
Hendy assessed that the irrigation channel for Bumi Mangli Permai Housing was still not well organized and this should be the responsibility of the housing developer.
"I appeal to all Jember residents to always maintain cleanliness in this rainy season, especially ensuring that water channels are not clogged," he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Jember Police, AKBP Hery Purnomo, said that his party together with related ranks such as the Kodim would continue to maximize the acceleration of handling the impact of the flood disaster, especially helping to clean people's houses.
"We together with the ranks of the TNI-AD, especially the 0821 Kodim, will continue to do our best to help residents affected by floods, including during the process of normalizing infrastructure that was severely damaged," he said.
