General Motors To Produce Electric Heavy Trucks By 2035
JAKARTA - General Motors CEO Mary Barra has announced that the company will produce an all-electric heavy-duty (HD) truck by 2035, around the same time that she has plans to bring a new all-electric light-duty vehicle. .
"This all-electric HD truck will be engineered to provide easy heavy-duty hauling and towing while offering customers incredible new features and reach needed to complete the toughest jobs," Barra said.
The timeline would give the automaker enough time to discontinue its HD trucks featuring an internal combustion engine as GM had previously announced that it would stop selling ICE vehicles by 2040.
It says the company's engineers have had plenty of time to develop a capable electric vehicle architecture that will carry out HD truck duties.
As electric vehicles continue to take over the automobile industry, it is expected that electric haul trucks and electric construction equipment will soon become a common sight in the construction sector.
With the launch of the light-duty Chevrolet Silverado EV, General Motors has embarked on a journey towards its stated goal.
The automaker has also shared that the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV in its work truck trim will feature a pair of motors that will produce a power output of 510 hp with a peak torque of 834 Nm.
The top trim of this model will produce a power output of 66hp and maximum torque of 1,056+ Nm.
On the other hand, Toyota Motor has surpassed GM to take the top spot as the best-selling automaker in the United States for 2021. General Motors has held the number one ranking for 90 years.
Toyota sold about 2,332 million vehicles in the US last year compared with GM which sold about 2,218 million units last year.
