Found Guilty For Attacking The Police, Maguire Was Removed From The England National Team
JAKARTA - Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was found guilty of assaulting the police. This decision was taken during a trial on the island of Syros, Greece, which Maguire did not attend on Tuesday, August 25 local time.
Launched by Antara on Wednesday, the British defender was declared violent, attempted bribes, acts of violence against public officials and harassment after he was arrested in Mykonos.
For that mistake, Maguire was sentenced to a suspended sentence of 21 months and ten days in prison. Maguire himself has returned to England.
United said in a statement that Maguire's legal team would appeal and the player continued to fight to assert his innocence.
The sentence was suspended for three years because it was his first unlawful act, and the charges were minor crimes.
A few hours before the trial, Maguire's name was included by England coach Gareth Southgate in the list of players he was preparing for the Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark.
Southgate said he believed he had made the right decision after speaking with Maguire.
"I spoke to Harry. I got a very different point of view to the story from what was recorded. You can only make decisions from the facts you look at," said Southgate.
England will play Iceland in Reykjavik on September 5, and host Denmark in Copenhagen three days later.
However, moments later, Maguire's name was dropped by Soutgate from the England squad.
"Given tonight's developments, I can confirm that I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England squad for the games against Iceland and Denmark," said Southgate.
"As I said earlier today, I have the right to review this situation. After speaking with Manchester United and the player, I have taken this decision in the best interest of all parties and in consideration of its impact on our preparations for next week."
England decided not to call a replacement for Maguire.
