Despite Being The Most Complained Institution, Komnas HAM Says National Police Chief Sigit Makes Improvements At The Bhayangkara Corps

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) said that the Indonesian National Police (Polri) was the agency with the most complaints from the public throughout 2021.

"First the police, the two corporations, followed by the government and other agencies," said Komnas HAM Monitoring and Investigation Commissioner Mohammad Choirul Anam in Jakarta, Antara, Friday, December 31.

In detail, Anam did not mention the number of complaints submitted to Komnas HAM related to the Bhayangkara Corps.

The number of people who report the police and even go viral on various social media platforms, it can't be separated from service problems, acts of violence to torture.

"The death rate in detention is also high. Both related to police officers and other officers, but are in police custody," he said.

In mid to late 2021, Komnas HAM saw that there was a serious change in the dynamics of the police force. In the midst of pressure from Komnas HAM and the community towards the Police, the Bhayangkara Corps made a number of improvements.

Komnas HAM sees that there are some kind of accountability breakthroughs initiated by the National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, to bring about changes in the Indonesian National Police.

"One of the breakthroughs is the monitoring of online surveillance and complaints by the public," he said.

However, on the one hand, Komnas HAM sees this breakthrough as not yet widely known by the public, so it prefers to go viral through social media.

Anam said some cases that were of sufficient public concern could be resolved quickly by the police. This cannot be separated from the coordination between Komnas HAM and the Police. "It's quite a significant change," he said.

In fact, the National Police Chief took a firm stance by dismissing the personnel who were found guilty. The dismissal was related to services, acts of violence to behavior.
