ICW Asks The KPK To Handle The Pinangki Prosecutor's Case After The AGO Building Is On Fire
JAKARTA - Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has asked the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to take over the alleged corruption case of Attorney Pinangki Sirna Malasari. This is because ICW doubts the handling of the Pinangki case by the Attorney General's Office.
ICW researcher Kurnia Ramadhana said this request arose because from the start, his party had doubted the Attorney General's commitment to handling the case. Including, the emergence of a number of situations, such as a fire at the Attorney General's Office Building on Saturday, August 22, and other matters that have raised skepticism among the public.
"ICW urges the KPK to immediately take over the handling of this case," said Kurnia in a written statement quoted on Monday, August 24.
In his opinion, the KPK has the right to handle the case that ensnared Pinangki. Because based on Article 11 of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law, this anti-rasuah agency is given the authority to handle corruption cases involving law enforcement, in this case Attorney Pinangki Sirna Malasari.
Moreover, the handling of the case involving the Pinangki Attorney is far from over because the AGO still needs to prove a number of things such as determining the bribe party.
Kurnia assessed that it is impossible when there is a case of suspicion of bribery and gratification, but only one suspect has been named. "Second, the AGO must explain whether the departure of Attorney Pinangki Sirna Malasari was on his own initiative or because of an order from an internal person at the Attorney General's Office," he said.
Another thing that must also be proven is whether there was any communication between Attorney Pinangki Sirna Malasari and elements within the Supreme Court regarding assistance in handling the case of Djoko S Tjandra.
"Do not let the fire some time ago be used as an excuse to stop the steps to uncover this corruption scandal," he said.
Furthermore, ICW requested that the KPK participate in investigating the cause of the fire at the Attorney General's Office Main Building. According to Kurnia, this anti-graft agency needs to take part in order to prove whether the fire was purely due to negligence or was deliberately planned by a certain person whose case is currently being investigated by the Adhyaksa Corps.
"It is not impossible that there are parties who plan to remove the evidence stored in the building," he said.
"If this is true, then the KPK can suspect the person under Article 21 of the Corruption Act concerning obstruction of justice or attempts to obstruct the legal process with the threat of a sentence of 12 years in prison," added Kurnia.
Previously, Kapuspenkum Attorney General (Kejagung) Hari Setiyono asked the public not to make assumptions and speculate on the fire that razed the Main Office of the AGO on Saturday, August 22 evening.
"The cause of this fire is still in the process of being investigated by the National Police. Therefore, please be patient and we ask not to make speculations and irresponsible assumptions," Hari told reporters at a press conference broadcast on YouTube, Sunday, August 23.
"Let us wait patiently for the results of the police," he said.
It is known that the Attorney General's Office Building on Jalan Sultan Hasanudin Dalam 1, Jakarta caught fire on Saturday, August 22. This fire started at 19.10 WIB and it is not certain what caused it. The part that was burned was the Main Building which consisted of the staffing, guidance and intelligence rooms.
After burning for almost 12 hours, the fire finally went out at around 06.28 WIB. A total of 65 fire engines including two Bronto Skylift units were deployed to extinguish the fire. There were no fatalities in this incident.
