JAKARTA - The celebration of the new year is a ceremony that people have been waiting for before the turn of the year. Various types of activities are carried out to close the year with unforgettable moments.

Every country has a new year celebration with different traditions, including Indonesia. The following countries have their own unique way of celebrating New Year's Eve.

Japan

In Japan, at the turn of the year each shrine will ring its bell 108 times. In Buddhist belief this will cleanse everyone because the 108 ringing bells represent the 108 dirty thoughts of humans.

Ecuador

New Year's celebrations in Ecuador are also unique. The reason is, the people there burn the scarecrows on the eve of the turn of the year. It is said that doing this is to get rid of society's misfortune in the following year.

Scotland

On December 30, usually around 8,000 people will revel in holding torches creating a river of fire along the road from Parliament Square to Calton Hill.
