Earthquake M 5.7 In Bengkulu Due To Subduction Activities

JAKARTA - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 rocked the west coast of Sumatra, precisely 136 kilometers west of Bengkulu City. The earthquake occurred on Saturday at 07.39.36 WIB due to the subduction zone activity.

"The earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to subduction zone activity. The earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," said Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center for the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Rahmat Triyono as quoted by Antara, Saturday.

The results of the BMKG analysis show that the earthquake has an update parameter with a magnitude of 5.5. The epicenter of the earthquake is located in the sea at the coordinates of 3.98 south latitude and 101.04 east longitude, at a depth of 21 kilometers (km).

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism indicate that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.

Earthquake shocks can be felt in the Bengkulu II-III MMI area where the vibrations are felt real in the house. There was a tremor as if a truck was passing by, and MMI's Kepahiang II, namely vibrations felt by several people, light objects hanging swaying.

Until now there has been no report on the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake. The monitoring results also showed that up to 08.04 WIB there was no aftershock activity.

Regarding the earthquake, he appealed to the public to remain calm and not be affected by issues that cannot be justified.

The community is also advised to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake and ensure that the buildings they live in are earthquake resistant and do not suffer damage before returning home.
