Australian Man Barred From Paying Child Support For 8,000 Years
JAKARTA - An Australian man has reportedly been banned from leaving Israel for 8,000 years and will not be allowed to leave Israel until 9999, due to unpaid child support, NewsAU reports.
Noam Huppert, a 44-year-old Australian citizen, has had a stay-of-exit order against him since 2013. The order cannot be revoked until he makes child support payments of $3.34 million.
"The total in 2013 was approximately 7.5 million NIS (3.34 million US dollars)," Mr. Huppert, who works as an analytical chemist for a pharmaceutical company, told NewsAU.
Israeli courts have ruled that Huppert owes 5,000 NIS per month to each child until they turn 18.
“Since 2013, I have been locked up in Israel,” Huppert explained, adding that he is one of many Australians who have been “persecuted by the Israeli justice system simply because they marry Israeli women.”
The law on child support is unclear, although it appears the year 9999 was set as that is the highest appropriate date in the field.
Israel's laws on divorce and child support have faced criticism before, for being unclear and unfair.
Director Sorin Luca, who made a documentary about Israel's divorce law called "No Exit Order", stated, "A woman can easily place a travel ban on her husband, with child support requests that can be extended to the entire duration of the childhood marriage. child."
"Once a father gets an order, he can be jailed for up to 21 days, whether he can afford it or not, without his financial investigation. Men are expected to pay 100 per cent or even more of their income to pay for their children," Luca continued.
Separately, the United States Department of State also warned of Israel's child support issues with non-citizen parents, saying civil and religious courts in Israel are actively using their powers to bar certain individuals, including non-residents, from leaving the country until debt or legal claims. others against them resolved.
It added that the US Embassy cannot cancel the debts of US citizens or guarantee their departure from Israel, as they face a ban on leaving the country until the debt is settled.
