Komnas HAM Reminds Police To Be Sensitive And Respond To Public Reports, Mainly Regarding Sexual Violence

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) asked law enforcement officials to pay attention to the right to justice in public services. In fact, the police are reminded to be sensitive and responsive to reports submitted by the public, especially those related to sexual violence.

"For certain cases, we need police who are more sensitive, more responsive to public reports, for example related to the issue of sexual violence," said Komnas HAM Commissioner Beka Ulung Hapsara when presenting Komnas HAM's Year End Notes which were conducted online, Tuesday, December 28.

Beka did not deny that a number of law enforcement officers had shown quick response and sensitivity to public reports. However, the follow-up legal process must also show the same thing so that there is no negative response from the public.

In addition, Beka said, law enforcement must also be applied strictly even though the perpetrators reported are law enforcement officers themselves.

Moreover, there are many examples of incidents where law enforcement officers who commit crimes are only processed after their actions have gone viral on social media. One of them was the collision of two teenagers by three TNI soldiers in Garut, West Java.

"I think it is important for the police to emphasize the issue of a fair and equal legal process for anyone who is suspected of or committed a crime," he said.

"It is important to emphasize that there is a fair and transparent legal process. Not only when it goes viral. But later when it reaches the military court process or others. The court process must also be fair and transparent," concluded Beka.
