Receives Offer From Flamengo, Paulo Sousa Asks To End His Contract With Poland, PZPN President: Irresponsible
JAKARTA - Poland coach Paulo Sousa asked for his contract to be terminated with a mutually agreeable decision after receiving an offer from Brazilian elite league club Flamengo.
However, the president of the Polish Football Association (PZPN) Cezary Kulesza rejected the request.
Portuguese media reported that Sousa would start working in Rio de Janeiro in January even though his contract with Poland expires in March.
Sousa's agent told Polish news agency PAP on Monday that Sousa had not signed a contract with Flamengo.
"This is very irresponsible behavior, not in accordance with the previous statements of this coach. Therefore, I firmly reject it," Kulesza said via Twitter as quoted by Reuters.
At the Euro 2020 event which was held in June-July 2021, Paulo Sousa was unable to do much. Poland was eliminated from the group stage after being defeated by Sweden 3-2 in the last match.
Robert Lewandowski and his friends also had to go through the 2022 World Cup playoff phase because they lost 1-2 to Hungary in the last match of Group I. Poland ended in second place in the group with 20 points.
Meanwhile, in the UEFA Nations League draw held on 17 December, Poland joined in the A4 League with Belgium, the Netherlands, and Wales.
