TikTok Deletes 380K Of Hate Speech Videos
JAKARTA - Just like other social media, TikTok is also used as an intermediary for hate speech. At least TikTok has removed 380 thousand hate speech content on its platform.
According to a report quoted by CNET, Friday, August 21, this year TikTok has removed more than 380,000 videos in the United States (US) that violate its policy of hate speech. In addition, TikTok also deleted more than 64,000 comments with the same tone and 1,300 accounts related to hate speech.
"Content that intends or does attack, threatens, incites violence against, or degrading individuals or groups of individuals on the basis of protected attributes such as race, religion, gender, gender identity, national origin, and many more," wrote TikTok Security Chief Eric. Han on his official blog.
Eric said that the company has a policy of removing hate speech content, including to whom this content is directed. As a form of transparency, TikTok seeks to reduce the number of content that is racial and that conveys hate speech.
This includes things like not showing results when users search for certain terms that normally lead to problematic content such as searching for the word 'Hitler', as well as redirecting them to Community Guidelines and removing the infringing content they find.
Apart from deleting related content, TikTok has also formed a team to oversee this kind of thing on its platform. Especially in the run-up to elections in the US, where social media platforms have become crucial for spreading misinformation or hate speech.
On the other hand, TikTok is also still trying to keep operating in the US. Especially after President Trump signed an executive policy regarding the ban on TikTok and a number of Chinese companies from doing business in the US.
